Appreciate the Moments January Photo Challenge: Winter

With over a week before the new semester begins, I've had plenty of time to slow down and enjoy winter--after all, playing in the snow with Barley and Rye is much more fun than building a syllabus and course schedule. That means, though, that my real challenge for the theme of Winter in the Appreciate the Moments Monthly Photo Challenge hosted by Dog Mom Days and The Everyday Dog Mom is choosing a photo! Living with two abominable snow dogs means that I'm constantly taking pictures to try to capture their impressive snow moves.

Mid-December brought a little snow to us and then we ran away to Alabama for a couple weeks and pretended winter didn't exist (I was happier about that arrangement than the dogs were). While we were gone, though, our area got about 30 inches of snow in a two day period, so our yard was an abominable snow dog's paradise when we got home.

The windchills have been around -12 every day since we've been home, so Barley's been opting out of most of the backyard fun, but it's given me plenty of fun moments with Rye in the backyard.

We've played a lot of fetch (and keep away because for some reason when there's snow, Rye forgets how to give the toy back to me), so I considered picking a picture of Rye with her Flip toy and her face covered in snow.

Our yard is also a bit of an obstacle course with all of the plants that are covered and the different deep drifts that have formed throughout the yard, so I loved the picture of Rye jumping over a snow drift at the base of a tree as she had zoomies around the yard.

And I loved the one of her chasing her Flip as it flew through the air.

But my absolute favorite winter photo and my pick for the January Photo Challenge is one we took last month in one of our first snows of the winter.

This photo is everything I love about winter. First are the crazy ears that both girls have from the wind blowing off Lake Erie. It's also one of those moments when we had the entire world to ourselves. You can see the Geneva Lodge in the background--and while we love sharing the trail along the lake with the visitors there (especially Barley who likes to find her way in front of their cameras), we especially love when the world is quiet and we can stop and enjoy all of the little things that catch our attention without worrying about bikes, runners, or other dogs. And I never get tired of the way the lake looks during winter with the different shades of blue in the water and the sky.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of the ways that other pet families are enjoying the winter, too! Thanks to our hosts for putting together a fun way to see lots of great photos and connect with other bloggers!

  3. LOL! That last photo is awesome, being an ear family, ears are always fun! We are hoping to get some snow this week when it warms up. This morning is -17 actual temp again. It's been below zero every day for about 2 weeks now. We enjoy a few days like this, but it is time to warm up. Enjoy the winter!

    1. I always get a kick out of your family's ear pictures! They are the best, aren't they? We've had windchills around there for days and there's so much snow pushed up along the street that there's not really a good place to walk and we're starting to go nuts!

  4. I love that photo - those ears! That is exactly what I love about winter too - the peace and tranquility of it.
We are SO ready for that warm up! Temps are getting barely above zero this weekend so we're hibernating for the whole thing. The 30's they're predicting this week are going to be so nice!

    1. I never thought I'd look forward to days in the 30s but they're sounding really good right about now! We're definitely looking forward to getting out and enjoying the peace of winter once it's a little tiny bit warmer.
